check it out: make something day. They have some ideas - but mainly, i appreciate the idea of taking a time when you're together with friends or family, and creating something (instead of shopping). This is a 'next step' from Buy Nothing Day - the day after thanksgiving, when all the stores have dramatic sales.

My mom told me that it would be the best Christmas ever if I would spend some time helping her with her empty photo albums and boxes of photographs. We'll probably get started on "Make Something Day."
